Short Blog Regarding Fire Emblem Switch 2 Black Chara /
I hope to share my full thoughts on Black and dark-skinned characters in anime-style works one day insha Allah.

Asalam aleikoum how's it going. I have to admit I'm pretty excited for Fire Emblem Switch 2, be it the story or gameplay. I really liked FE Switch 1 too (but I haven't played Engage yet.).
Anyway, remember back in June 2026 when I really praised Fire Emblem Switch 2's chara design? I still think it's great overall. But the more and more new characters I saw via the Japanese Twitter PR, the more concerns I've had.
Chara design is more than how the characters look like visually, and I have a lot of small concerns, nitpicking, and sometimes actual issues with the characters in Fortune's Weave when it comes to looks but also beyond their looks.
Names, ages, anime archetypes used, fighting styles, story, etc. This isn't really the game's fault though, and these are the same issues I have as with most Black or generally dark-skinned characters in anime-styled works.
I know it's wack to claim this and then not elaborate, but it'd take a really long time and I want to explain it all properly, not in a quick blog post. Either way it's likely Fortune's Weave will still be better Black representation than like 95% of other anime-styled works out there, because the bar is that low.
Obviously there's how Queen Edogawa and her goons looks gray and ashy, but my concerns go well beyond that. To be honest it's one of the things that bother me the least, I'm a Black person who's been watching anime for decades so sadly I'm used to these kind of things.
And it's not like it would make it acceptable, but maybe there's a story reason behind this issue in particular. It'd be incredibly funny if my current headcanon was true: Like, they're actually white people black-facing, because they're actually half-dragons who want to pass as humans, but didn't know how black people usually look, hence the ashiness.
It would surpass Genshin's "Black people in Teyvat are all from this country called Nata but till now if they traveled out of it, they'd lose their superpowers and memories, that's why there was never a single Black NPC till now".
Obviously, there's probably a simple grounded reason. Like, the developers probably wanted to feature different skin tones for the Black characters, which is a good thing, but didn't have enough Black people to consult and learn that the grey ashiness look specifically is no good.
I already said it several times be it in past videos, articles, and tweets, but for 3-4 years now,
I guess ever since Sumeru happened in Genshin (region inspired from north Africa and west Asia), I want to write something about the lack of Black characters in anime and anime styled pop culture. Instead of simply stating the simple truth 'it's racist", I want to explain the roots of that racism. With a deep discussion on why things turned out this way, format by format. Anime, manga, novels, games, sociage (gacha games), etc. Some real deep analysis instead of just obviously pointing out that it's racism or going "Woah Ororon in Genshin is White that's messed up".
(This was kinda funny to see to me. Pop-culture discussion especially game discussion is extremely White, so I assume when Nata had just released, most sites, youtubers, etc, didn't know what to say to explain why Nata is bad overall. Plus the fact that most commentators don't actually play Genshin (nor sociage nor Asian games). And it was before all the nice explanations from fans going over the various inspirations from various African countries etc. Everyone needed a quick easy example fast. So my guess is they saw one person talk about Ororon being named after mythological deity Ọlọrun and saw that it's an acceptable example to use, and it's why that example got reused tons of times everywhere. I personally didn't even care about Ororon being white. There's deeper issues. And it could have actually been peak skibiddy kino if he was white but his eternally young adoptive grandma Citlali was black, but obviously this didn't happen. As a side note, Citlali is my favorite chara in Nata and the sole one I got with Mavuchan and Iansan.)
Anyway, I've tried writing articles about Black chara design sporadically, but never finished any. It's quite long to explain all my theories, and would require true research if I wanna make it like, serious and solid enough to look like an "article" rather than a "blog post".
I tried pitching the idea to sites.
"Why anime games perpetually lack Black representation"
"Explaining the lack of Black characters in otaku culture and popular gacha games"
Etc.
This way I'd obtain editing and support other than my own. But it's really difficult to get a pitch accepted these days. There's only a few gaming sites left, and most of the time they have no pitching contact info and no budget for freelancers.
I really wanna make this project happen. I think most of the thoughts I have on these issues are rarely ever discussed, because discussion about Black characters is primarily led by (Black) USAjin point of views, or non-otaku and thus misguided point of views. I have a lot of thoughts on chara design as a black otaku, who's been watching anime for as long as I can remember, who is also Muslim, and who is also not an USAjin.
I want to explain how better Muslim representation would be better representation for everyone. How certain archetypes shifted over the decades in anime culture. The role of specific genres like fighting games, or of specific industries like the seiyuu industry. Why in a way Black character representation has receded depending on your point of view due to how Japanese pop-culture changed over the decades. Etc etc.
So this is my last resort. It might be unprofessional to go "I can't afford to explain these cool ideas so you should paypal me" but I've ran out of ideas lol. If you're an editor on some site and interested:

If no one contacts me, I'll just lock in and kick off writing and self-editing. Even if I end up with articles that sound insane to non otakublackfrenchmuslims, I'll still publish anyway. By my own means little by little insha Allah, even if it'll take months. That's how most Black people have always got things done anyway.
